Updated July 14, 2023
The Town of Red Hook recently received grant funds from NYSERDA as part of the Clean Energy Communities program to demonstrate the benefits of using electric landscaping equipment. With new electric mowers and trimmers, the Town will do two things:
- Continue to electrify maintenance of Town properties, like the Red Church Cemetery and Recreation Parks
- Offer a free demo of electric lawn maintenance to some local residents in partnership with the Red Hook Community Center during the summer of 2023
Why electrify lawn maintenance equipment?
Traditional mowers, blowers, and trimmers are powered by gas or diesel and make a lot of noise. Electric lawn maintenance equipment is cleaner and quieter and significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions!

During July and August of 2023, the Town of Red Hook is partnering with the Red Hook Community Center’s youth employment program to offer free electric lawn care demos at residential homes in five neighborhoods:
- July 10-15: Red Hook Estates
- July 17-22: College Park
- July 24-29: Forest Park
- July 31 - August 5: Willow Park
- August 7-12: Linden Acres
Residents with a lawn less than 0.5 acres in size—or a lawn that takes less than an hour to mow—are eligible for the program. Priority will be given to residents who are in need of help, especially financially or physically, though we encourage all residents to sign up. Residents who sign up agree to be at home during the demonstration.

There are many available options for electric landscaping equipment—even riding mowers!—from major brands such as Ego, Ryobi, Stihl, and Toro. Here is a list of the equipment the town is purchasing:
Alternatively, if you are a professional landscaper looking to go electric, there are commercial-grade electric mowers available, including ones from Greenworks and Gravely.
